Surveillance Efforts Are Being Optimised In Light Of Virus Mutations Outside Of Indonesia

JAKARTA - From the results of research by LBM Eijkman under the supervision of the Ministry of Research and Technology, the mutation of the new COVID-19 B117 virus variant has not been found in Indonesia. However, D614G mutations have been found.

Spokesperson for the COVID-19 Task Force Prof. Wiku Adisasmito media answers in the International Press Briefing at the Jakarta Presidential Palace, Thursday (11/2/2021) broadcast on the Secretariat YouTube channel. These findings are based on research by running Whole Genome Sequencing for potential variants of the COVID-19 virus mutation. And the number of genomes that have been collected into GISAID or influenza data bank in the world is 244.

"In principle, the virus constantly undergoes minor changes as it spreads between humans. It is possible for the virus to mutate and make the vaccine less effective. However, this only happens when the changes are very extreme," Wiku explained.

The government, he said, continued to anticipate various possibilities that could occur. Because the development of the COVID-19 pandemic is very dynamic. One of the efforts related to this the government will continue to carry out genomic surveillance.

"But keep in mind that the development of the COVID-19 pandemic is also very dynamic. So that the government continues to strive to anticipate the worst possible future," Wiku added.
